The Shire Horse, introduced into Britain by William the Conqueror in 1066, carried the knights into tournaments and battle. In the First World War they were used for transportation by the French and british armies. Apart from carting man and hauling long-distance goods the Shires played a vital role in the agricultural revolution of the late eighteenth century. By the 60's the Shire horse was on the brink of extinction except for the enthusiasm and dedication of a small group of breeders and devotees known as 'the Few' This video gives an insight into how these 'gentle giants have survived the passage of time. Made with invaluable the support of The Shire Horse Society. Running time 60 minutes.
